Notting Hill is a Romantic comedy which is a light, entertaining film to watch. The key feature which is used to sell this film is the popular genre, Romance. The audience is an important part of a genre meaning that the viewer has to recognise the genre elements which they most prefer. Although there is so many Rom Com films out there, viewers never tire of seeing them and they are still increasingly popular. Another main addition to selling this film has to be the A list cast, Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts are the main characters. More Brit Rom-coms such as Love actually and Bridget Jones Diary also star Hugh Grant as he has become an iconic figure in this genre. The soundtrack of this film includes popular music and the typical British Rom Com location in London which appeals to the audience. It also features a reasonably accurate representation of stardom in the narrative and the way it portrays the press and paparazzi is very accurate which makes the film more realistic and believable. Another aspect of this film which sells itself to the audience is that it is a best selling novel meaning that as the novel is popular the film must be pretty decent. Also what sells this film to the audience from watching this trailer is the romance and chemistry between two very different types of people which makes the audience have the idea in their head that anyone can fall in love.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy - Official Trailer [HD]
This film Tinker Tailor Soldier Sailor is a mysterious thriller. Colin Firth influences people to watch this film, and is a way of marketing the film as if you see that famous actors are in a certain film it may persuade you to see that film. This trailer sells this film as a dramatic thriller, it gives you the impression that it is a dark and sinister tale which has a complex plot. When you see this trailer you expect a fast paced film with suspense and anticipation. Every character in this film seems suspicious making this trailer leave you confused, but keen to figure out the plot. You are left with unanswered questions once you have watched the trailer as its leaving you with questions deliberately to show you that it is ambiguous and also to hold your attention. I think it involves you into the film as you feel like you are solving the mystery, there are quick shots of all the characters meaning one of them is the answer to the mystery.

Hobbies- dancing is my main hobby as I am part of a dance group and we perform in shows once every two years which I enjoy a lot. I am very interested in fashion and watching TV and films. Although i don't go to them that often I love going to gigs as I love listening to music and the atmosphere at a gig is amazing.
Print media- When it comes to print media I'm not really one of those people who regularly checks the news and reads the newspaper every day, I'm more a magazine kind of person. If there was something specific I wanted to find out I would go on the BBC news website, I prefer doing this as you can find out exactly what you want very quickly and it saves paper! The magazine I read the most is the TV choice ones as I love reading about the new story lines in the soaps and it also tells you what films are being shown on the TV. I also read typical celebrity magazines such as OK and fashion magazines such as vogue and glamour as fashion is something I'm really interested in.
Radio media- If I'm in the car I like to listen to Heart FM or kiss FM but that is purely just for music, I dislike too much talking on the radio, I prefer the news on the TV it is more interesting when you can see what's happening.
Music industry-(my favourite)
I have a fairly wide range of music that I am interested in, the main ones being pop, acoustic, folk rock, I’m not a massive fan of indie and rock but there are some exceptions that I like. I can be easily cheered up by listening to certain music. The Beatles have to be one of my favourites, although I was not brought up in that era there music is greatly appreciated by a lot of young people meaning that it never dates. The cheapest and easiest way of accessing music is by going on the internet, I often go on you tube or listen to music via itunes. By listening to it online you often find out about other music too from going on you tube. I have to agree with illegal downloading as it makes being able to listen to music that much easier and quicker. However I feel that it isn’t fair on the artist who has spent the time creating the music and writing it to have it played to millions of people for free. The music industry is one of the most influential parts of society. Many people mostly teenagers tend to get their style of dress from musicians that they like. Singers have always set the tone for fashion trends. I see the Beatles as a big example on how many styles changed due to listening to them, they had a major impact on influencing fashion and presented their famous hairstyle which was a popular style for the era of the 60’s.
Video games- I'm not a massive fan of video games, I don't like the violence in some of them and in my opinion there a waste of time. However one of the exceptions is Guitar hero as when i play on it although I'm awful I feel like I can play a guitar and I enjoy some of the music on it.
New technology- All new technology has had some impact on my understanding of the world, computers have meant I can easily access information from all over the world therefore improving my knowledge. You can now communicate with anyone you want so easily due to new technology, for example mobile phones allow you to speak to people from all over the world. Also social networking, MSN and E-mail are ways to chat to people without even having to speak. Some people could argue that new technology ruins your communication skills as a lot of people are constantly texting or chatting over msn meaning that they don’t have to go out and socialise with people face to face.
New technology has made access to films, TV programmes, and the music industry very easy which has caused a less demand to go to the cinema. You can now watch new films without paying and from the comfort of you own home via online streaming and illegal downloading. Tv programmes can be accessed from websites such as 4od and bbc iplayer meaning you can watch them any time you like. The internet opens you up to a wide variety of music and upcoming musicians from websites such as YouTube. Ipods and mp3 players mean you don’t have to even buy a CD as you can download music online. Media texts can be easy to create due to technology as I can find websites on google which help you create a blog and they can be posted on blogspot, tumblr, myspace and others. Also technology such as powerpoint and word can make it easy to create media texts.
Television- The tv channels I go on the most have to be, E4, MTV, ITV1, and BBC1. I occasionally watch film 4 to see what they are showing at the moment as they show a good variety of films. I especially like soap operas and American dramas because I like the reality of it as it is an exaggerated view of real life which makes it more interesting. I like to watch E4 for comedy as it shows a lot of american comedy, for example the big bang theory and scrubs. My all time favourite television genre is soap operas, although they are not always the most realistic view of life they always keep me glued whenever I watch them however unrealistic they are. I like being able to see how other people live their lives and how different cultures in a community works out and that’s one of the reasons I found soaps so fascinating. Most memorable television programmes that stick out to me our running series such as Lost and prison break. I love how even though there has been a lot seasons they still get better and better. I also consider the documentary by louis theroux ‘ The most hated family in America’ a very memorable tv programme as it shows extremist religious views and how different certain societies are. It shows you what you would consider completely unacceptable and wrong and how different their views are to the majority of people.

Feature film - I don’t really have a particular genre that I would class as my favourite as I watch a variety but the main ones I enjoy are chick flicks, which is quite stereotypical of a teenage girl to like but I like watching something which is realistic and which has comedy in it as well. For example my favourites are 500 days of summer, Bridget jones diary and two classics, pretty woman and runaway bride both starring Julia Roberts. The first film which I see as outstanding has to be slumdog millionaire, the way it is filmed and put together is amazing, it left me confused when I first watched it but when you concentrate and notice the flashbacks it shows what an amazing and clever film it is. I like the way it shows you the slums of India and how shocking life is for them. Another film which I find outstanding is hairspray, it isn’t what you would obviously think of as an outstanding film but I love the way it adds a musical aspect to the storyline. It is socially relevant to its era so therefore you feel it was filmed at that particular time. Black swan is another outstanding film, it is a thriller which is about a ballet dancer who starts to lose her mind as she starts to feel she is becoming the black swan. The cinematography in this film has won awards and the directing style is very sophisticated and mature. There is some violent and disturbing images in this film which make it such a breathtaking thriller. I prefer to watch films at the comfort of my home as if you have bought the dvd you still get the good quality and you can pause it if you want to do something. However I like to watch new films at the cinema as you get the 3D effects as well which you wouldn't be able to see at home. My favourite cinema is vue purely because it is close to where I live and it has multiplex screens so a lot of films will be shown. I prefer to watch a film in a group as I like to share the experience with someone else if it is a scary or really funny film. I also ask questions a lot when I watch films which usually annoys people but It helps me understand the film.
Conclusion- What has most offended me in the media is an advert which is promoting a cleaning product ‘mr muscle’ it sounds like it shouldn’t be offensive at all. It is very sexist as it labels women as being the cleaners of the house as it always them doing the cleaning. I dislike the way it shows a very stereotypical view of a housewife making it seem that the only job women have is being a cleaner which isn’t true.
I have chosen media studies as an option as I think it allow me to be more creative and open up different career options for me, I also chose it as I think I will enjoy learning about it and especially the practical side of it.
